Police arrest man for allegedly defrauding victims of ₦18m through fake cleric Facebook account

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a man, Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, for allegedly impersonating a cleric on Facebook and defrauding unsuspecting victims of more than ₦18 million under the guise of offering prayers and spiritual assistance.

The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Ilaro Divisional Police Headquarters following a complaint by cleric Muyiwa Akogun, popularly known on Facebook as Prophet Dr Muyiwa Akogun.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that Akogun reported the incident on October 3, 2026, after members of the public raised concerns about fraudulent activities allegedly being carried out in his name through a duplicate Facebook account.

Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer in Ilaro deployed intelligence and detective operatives to track down the suspect.

Babaseyi said the suspect was eventually traced to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro-Ibogun axis, through technological monitoring and intelligence-led investigations.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to impersonating the cleric on Facebook, using his identity to issue fake prophecies and offer prayer services to unsuspecting individuals in Nigeria and abroad.

Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the suspect targeted people seeking spiritual assistance through the cleric’s Facebook page, gained their trust and defrauded them of more than ₦18 million.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud, identify possible accomplices and establish the circumstances surrounding the transactions.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ilaro operatives for their swift response and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling online fraud and identity theft.
